Bowl snapshot.

Two weeks remain in the Big Ten season. Most other conferences play another week beyond that. In any event, here's a quick snapshot of the various conferences and their bowl circumstances:

ACC: Bids: (8) Eligible: (6). BC (8-1); UVA (8-2); Clemson (7-2); VT (7-2); Wake (6-3); FSU (6-3). Eliminated: (1) Duke (1-8). Others: (5) Miami (5-4); GT (5-4); NC State (4-5); Maryland (4-5); UNC (3-6).
Big East: Bids: (4) Eligible: (4) Connecticut (8-1); WVU (7-1); USF (6-2); Cincy (6-2); Eliminated: (1) Syracuse (2-7). Others: (3) Rutgers (5-4); Louisville (5-4); Pitt (4-5).
Big XII: Bids: (9) Eligible: (6) Kansas (9-0); Oklahoma (8-1); Missouri (8-1); Texas (8-2); TT (7-3); Texas A&M (6-4). Eliminated: (2) Iowa State (1-8); Baylor (2-7). Others: (4) K-State (5-4); OSU (5-4); Colorado (5-5); Nebraska (4-6).
Big Ten: Bids: (7) Eligible: (7) OSU (10-0); Michigan (8-2); Illinois (7-3); Penn St. (7-3); Purdue (7-3); Wisconsin (7-3); Indiana (6-4). Eliminated: (1) Minnesota (1-9). Others: (3) Iowa (5-5); Northwestern (5-5); MSU (5-5).
Pac-10: Bids: (6) Eligible: (4) Oregon (8-1); ASU (8-1); USC (7-2); Cal (6-3). Eliminated: none. Others: (6) UCLA (5-4); Or St. (5-4); Arizona (4-6); Stanford (3-6); Washington (3-6); Washington St. (3-6).
SEC: Bids: (8) Eligible: (9) LSU (8-1); Georgia (7-2); Auburn (7-3); Tennessee (6-3); Florida (6-3); Kentucky (6-3); Alabama (6-3); Arkansas (6-3); USC (6-4). Eliminated: (1) Mississippi (3-7). Others: (2) Vandy (5-4); MSU (5-4).
MAC: Bids: (3) Eligible: none. Eliminated: (2) EMU (3-7); NIU (1-8). Others: There are six MAC teams with five wins, so it's not worth the trouble.
C-USA: Bids: (6) Eligible: (4) ECU (6-4); UCF (6-3); Houston (6-3); Tulsa (6-3). Eliminated: (5) UAB (2-7); Rice (2-7); Tulane (2-7); Marshall (1-8); SMU (1-8). Others: (3) Southern Miss (5-4); Memphis (4-5); UTEP (4-5).
MWC:Bids: 4 Eligible: The MWC has four eligible teams and no BCS prospects, so this one is done.
WAC: Bids: 3. The WAC also has three eligible teams, but Hawaii has some unjustifiable BCS hopes.
A few notes:
  • One Gator Bowl bid is represented twice. The Gator Bowl used to be the ACC v. Big East/Notre Dame. It's now ACC v. Big East/Notre Dame/Big XII. As far as I can tell, the Gator Bowl has complete discretion.
  • There are four BCS at-large bids not represented in the numbers above.
  • If the Big XII a) gets two BCS bids; b) gets the Gator Bowl bid; c) Nebraska loses one more game, then the Bigt XII may not fill all of its tie-ins. The Big XII's last bowl tie in is the Texas Bowl in Houston (against the Big East).
  • The Big East and SEC look to be booked.
  • The Pac-10 has four six-loss teams and six bowl tie-ins. If all four of those teams lose another game and the Pac-10 gets an at-large bid, then a spot could open up. The Pac-10's last bowl tie-in is the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth.
